VINTON, LA–MAY 17, 2024—Fastest qualifier from the trials, B Second Cowboy, returned to Delta Downs Friday night for a 1/2-length victory in the $110,420 Old South Derby finals.
Jockey Guadalupe Lucia, Jr., who didn't ride him to his trial victory, got the call in race eight aboard B Second Cowboy from the three-hole. The son of #1 leading second-year-sire Flying Cowboy 123 led the field of ten from wire-to-wire, clocking a 105 speed index in :16.421 seconds. The post-time favorite's 330-yard win paid $4.20 on 1/1 odds.
The Old South Derby is B Second Cowboy's third victory this season from four starts, but the first time to grace the winner's circle for a stakes win. He placed second in the Oklahoma Derby at Remington Park in March.
The Texas-bred gelding has seven career wins and was a finalist in the Sam Houston Futurity [G2] and Evangeline Downs Futurity [G2] from his freshman campaign. Tonight's winnings of $55,210 increased his bankroll to $154,535.
Breeder/trainer Jose Espinosa saddled B Second Cowboy for owner Party Tyme Racing. The sorrel gelding is out of Nsm Favorite Zoomer by Favorite Cartel.
Lgm Flirting Hero, piloted by Rolando Cabrera, made an impressive gain from behind, crossing the wire second with a 102 speed index. The three-year-old gray gelding has three career wins and $77,045 in earnings, including the Gillespie County Fair Firecracker Futurity in 2023.
