Embryo transfer (ET) allows a mare to produce a foal without carrying the pregnancy herself. There are several reasons an owner might choose this option:

• Multiple foals in one season: A mare can only carry one foal per year, but with ET, she can be bred on multiple heat cycles and produce several embryos that recipient mares carry.

• Health and safety: ET can prevent foaling risks for older mares and mares with health issues that could make pregnancy or delivery dangerous.

• Twin ovulations: If a mare ovulates two oocytes, both embryos can be recovered and transferred to separate recipient mares, preventing risky twin pregnancies or twin reduction.

• Active competition mares: ET lets performance mares stay in training and competition while still producing foals.

• Season timing: ET is also useful late in the breeding season, allowing owners to get a foal while keeping the donor mare open for early breeding the next year.
