ALTOONA, IA—JULY 7, 2024—Ab Boogie bounced off a second-place effort in the June 22 trials to defeat the fastest qualifier, Five Bar Phi, in the $64,320 Cyclone Derby for accredited Iowa-Bred 3-year-olds Sunday afternoon at Prairie Meadows.

Ab Boogie broke on top under jockey Alferdo Triana, Jr., then kept clear to beat the post-time favorite by half-a-length. His 17.378 clocking for 350 yards equals a 99-speed index.

Trainer Manuel Campos saddled the Iowa homebred to his third career win in seven starts for owner-breeder Ruben Mojica. The son of champion sire Apollitical Blood is out of the Lil Kool Wagon mare Boogie Wagon.

Ab Boogie earned $29,944, boosting his bankroll to $71,455. Last season, he placed second in the Jim Bader Futurity.

Runner-up Five Bar Phi, under jockey Angel Ramirez, earned $11,578 for finishing second. Edward Ross Hardy trains the Five Bar Cartelgelding for owner Christine Hovey.

Cory Kilgore bred last season's Hawkeye Futurity winner from the Feature Mr Jess mare Number One Chorreada. Five Bar Phi has earned $112,350 in nine career starts.

Foxy Cowgirl, who defeated Ab Boogie in the trials, was bumped at the start under jockey Cristina Esqueda and finished 1-3/4 lengths back to earn $6,432 for third.

Also from the Ed Ross Hardy barn, the daughter of leading second-crop sire Flying Cowboy 123 races for owners Paul Luedemann, Corey Wilmes, and Cole Morehead.  Christine Hovey bred last year's Jim Bader Futurity winner from the Valiant Hero mare Foxy Millie.

Ab Boogie returned $11.40 to win, $4 to place, and $2.20 to show. Five Bar Phi paid $2.20 to place and $2.10 to show, while Foxy Cowgirl returned $2.10 to show.

Magic King Feet, Kool Lil Wink, Queens Grace, Summerhills Cowgirl, and Follies Flyer completed the field. Cowboy 123, Go To the Wood, and Youre So Vain were scratched.
