Multiple Grade 1 Winner Apollitical Pence Dominates Ruidoso Overnight Stakes on Saturday


RUIDOSO DOWNS, NM–SEPTEMBER 2, 2023–


In his first start since winning the Grade 1 Brad McKinzie Winter Championship Stakes over reigning world champion Empressum February 19, two-time Champion of Champions winner Apollitical Pence was a half-length winner in the $75,000 Overnight Stakes Saturday at Ruidoso Downs Racetrack & Casino.


Under jockey Francisco Calderon, Apollitical Pence covered the 250 yards in a quick :12.875 seconds, equaling a 115-speed index. Nearly one-year-ago the son of leading sire Apollitical Jess won the same race while establishing the Ruidoso Downs 250-yard track record of :12.732 seconds.


Trainer Monty Arrossa saddled Apollitical Pence to his 20th career win in 39 starts for owner Dunn Ranch. Co-bred with Womack Cavender Farms, from the Tres Seis mare Send City, Apollitical Pence picked up $45,000 today to increase his bankroll to $1,820,614.


A full-brother to Apollitical Pence, Apollitical Maverick, will sell as Hip 425 in the Ruidoso Select Yearling Sale on Sunday night at the Ruidoso Horse Sale Company's Sales Pavilion.


Runner-up Empty Promise earned $15,000 for owner Vista Del Sol, Inc. Trainer Marco Flores named jockey Sergio Becerra, Jr. to ride the Separate Interest filly out of Babe On The Beach by Strawfly Special. The $30,000 Los Alamitos Equine Sale graduate was bred in California by Steve D. Burns, DVM. She is a stakes winner of over $120,000.


Trainer Eddie D. Willis' Just A Kool Boy finished a neck back to earn $7,500 for owner Adina Baker. Jimmy Dean Brooks rode the Oklahoma bred son of Favorite Cartel from the One Famous Eagle mare Just Eagle. Garrett Baker bred the graded stakes winner of $211,681.


Sheza Freighttrain T, Bosanova Blood, Df Fabulous Jackie, Regalo Coronados, Candy Going Grand and Blue Riband completed the field.
